It has been a year since the inception of the Human Limb Regeneration website was created. It is one year on and amazing how this project has evolved and developed. A site that started to struggle to take off in the search engines and is now on the first page for different keyword subjects that this website reviews.
The purpose of this concept is to bring awareness of the latest development that scientists are working on in the field of regenerative medicine and stem cell research.
The aim to make human limb regeneration become from science fiction to science fact. We have looked at a variety of topics and research and there is plenty more to come.
The Holy Grail
For those whom are just reading this website for the first time and don’t know what limb regeneration is. It is understanding how to regrow lost limbs for amputees. At the moment the only option is advance prosthetic technologies which do offer some regained function.
However, a prosthetic limb will never be as good as the natural limb. The aim is to make the patient whole again and put back things as they were before their injury.
The Holy Grail is to regenerate the lost limb and organ similar to what Newts and Salamanders do. Such species can regenerate their limbs, organs, spinal cord and even parts of their brain. Plus they can promote scar free healing which is something else that scientists are looking at and hoping to apply to humans with devastating burns. The later would of course be a less ambitious goal but still challenging.
Here we have covered a variety of research areas that overall give a general outlook from scientists that they are heading in the right direction with human limb regeneration. Below is a handful of some of these topics and research that scientists have done.
- Salamander ERK Pathway – A set of proteins that must always be in operation for the cells in the body of the salamander to be reprogrammed. Scientists used a part of DNA structure to make the pathway to be active in mice always, and it gave the cells more potential for regeneration
- Extracellular Matrix – The discovery of extracellular matrix which is found in abundance with pigs bladder has helped people regrow finger tips in adults. Also the regrowth of muscle and Skeletal tissue is discussed.
- Oxygen Therapy – Discusses how oxygen blasts can be used on the wound of the injury to stimulate regrowth including bone. The research shows some promise in how pure oxygen can be used to regenerate tissue and some stimulation of bone regrowth in the injured amputation site.
- Bioelectricity to Regrow Limbs – Scientists are beginning to realize the important role electricity plays in stimulation of limb regeneration. Robert O. Becker who is one of the giants in this research of Bioelectricity and we look at this in detail along with what Michael Levin who has much sympathy with Becker’s work and integrating it into his own research.

A year has past and now looking further afield, this website and the interest has grown, I will continue to bring the latest research and what developments are being done to push things forward in limb regeneration for humans. However, I intend to interview scientists whom are leading in this field to share their work and offering their perspective on things.
New up coming research will be looking at what the US Military have done and how this is now moving over into the public domain, benefiting patients. Along with certain institutions that are specializing in this area. I also want to interview some people whom have suffered these kind of life changing injuries with their experiences.
One of the things that I intend to configure and setup is a discussion forum. The purpose of this feature is to create a community were people can connect and come together. This will also make it easier for their questions to be answered.
Expanding on this I intend to detail other regeneration projects that scientists are working on, this includes female clitoris and male foreskin regeneration for those whom have been tragically circumcised, and what can be done for full tissue restoration.
Along with looking at spinal cord regeneration, where stem cell technology is being studied that will find a cure for paralysis. Meaning that people will walk again instead of being confined to a wheel chair. We will also be looking at a cure for blindness how scientists are making great progress in this area. Another area of human regeneration I have been looking at is female breast regeneration instead of implants for women whom had a mastectomy.
These above features and new content I will be rolling out over the coming year.
