I am Alexander, and I have been very interested in research called Human Limb Regeneration since the early 1990s when I first read about the possibility. I also have a keen interest in all areas of regenerative medicine.
What Is Limb Regeneration? Simply put, it is about regrowing lost limbs in humans who have had such injuries.
The purpose of creating this blog is to generate exposure and bring to awareness the unique research currently being done by scientists in this field.
It was in April of 2013 when I got more involved and got started into action by seriously researching Limb Regeneration and what Scientists had done in this area of Regenerative Medicine.
What got me motivated was the Boston bombings and the nature of the horrific injuries that people suffered.
As I watched the news reports, I told myself we must fix this.
I concluded that if further research, funding and a more significant push in education, then perhaps we could be in a better position to help such people with these kinds of injuries than what we can provide them at the moment.
So I started researching what developments have been made.
I was amazed at how much progress had been accomplished. Some serious time and money are being spent to make this possible someday.
As mentioned above, I wanted to create this site to raise awareness of regenerative medicine and help provide more interest and encourage more support for scientists. Also, I wanted those who have suffered such injuries to offer hope and inspiration and show them that scientists are working full-time to make it a reality one day.
A Little About Me…
I am not a scientist, and my background is as a Software Engineer, Web Developer and Designer, with around 15 years of experience in the IT Industry. I also like blogging, documenting my passions and interests to offer value and solutions in the online community.
Originally I come from Northern Scotland in Britain, where I was brought up and lived all my life. I have also travelled and worked in America and Canada.
I worked in the National Health Service in the Highlands of Scotland (NHS Highlands) for four years as a Clinical Correspondence Web Developer, which is one of the highlights of my career in health.
At this point, I got excellent exposure to my technical skills, migrating into Medicine.
I continue to work in IT Software Development and as a Blogger.

I have been reading your article with great interest
I had a fire accident in 1966 which left me with the loss of limbs (not completely) on my right han – 4 fingers.. I have done some research before and had a couple of operations throughout the years, however to date I haven’t found anything to improve my hand althuogh doctors have told me that it may be possible in years to come. I was looking for advice to find out if Limb Regeneration is something I should look in to.
I also come from the North of Scotland and I now live in the South of England.

Thank you so much for your comment and sorry about your injury. Firstly I apologize for not replying sooner. Due to work I have been trying to find a suitable time to progress further with my site and project.
However, this is going to change. There are lots of interesting ideas and a big vision for this blog to be implemented. Now with the holidays I can spend some time working hard on updating everything here with new articles.
Most importantly is taking the time to reply to people’s comments on here on the site.
What kind of life changes did you experience with such an injury that you had? Could you talk about it further? It’s amazing that you come from Northern Scotland such a small world.
I have recently travelled to Northern Scotland again to visit my family and friends for Christmas and New Year. I usually visit at least once or twice a year. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and New Year.
To answer your question I would recommend limb regeneration to research into. I know that the military in the USA have been researching heavily into better helping with Soldiers whom have missing fingers or parts of their hand lost in combat.
Regeneration of toes and fingers I would think would be the first big breakthrough. Even if partial growth of fingers is possible then that could make all the difference in improving the quality of life of the patient and making it easier to pick up a cup of coffee and other every day tasks.
Also there are other aspects of regrowth such as stimulation of tissue growth in the lab and applying this in surgery.
There is a number of institutions in regenerative medicine in the States that are doing some kind of clinical trials. So I will post the information to you for your further research to see if it can help you further.

I am a medically retired, US Army Soldier, who lost multiple limbs during the War in Iraq in the year 2005. I lost my Left thumb & Right Arm, Leg & Ear.
When I heard of limb regeneration, I was shocked & eager to become “A Salamander Soldier” & to find out more in research… Although, I believe only fingers & parts of the human hand are being “regenerated”… I wanted to ask, IF the technology will ever improve to regenerate full limbs? I have wondered why God kept me alive… maybe it was for me to find this “regenerative medical breakthrough”.

Thank you for your comment here and looking through my blog on the research being done on limb regeneration. I am really sorry that you have suffered multiple limb loss during service to your country and more needs to be done to help people like yourself. I have read up about the appalling injuries due to the conflicts on the Iraq and Afghanistan war.
Have you heard of the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine or AFIRM? I have written up about it here in this posting, US Military Research Into Regrowing Lost Limbs. Perhaps if you contact them they may be able to help you and become involved in their research in some way? This link is also one of their main sites: AFIRM.
I know on the their website they are conducting clinical trials for military patients. Also this website and information I think will be of interest to you.
To answer your questions I do believe very strongly that regrowing lost limbs for humans will be possible in the near future. Certainly scientists would not be working as hard as they are full time whom specialize in this area of regenerative medicine if it was possible. When will this happen? No one can say for certain at the moment but I think the mid-2020s (which is not that far away) is going to be very compelling with breakthroughs being discovered.

This is the very reason why I started this blog that would bring to awareness and to offer hope and inspiration for those whom have had such injuries. I am always surprised that the majority are not aware of this kind of scientific research that is being done.
I have a blogger friend in Florida and when I showed her my blog with what it was about, she had no idea and was amazed that scientists were even talking about the possibility let along doing research experiments in the lab that might one day evolve into clinical trials.
Yes I do think this will happen someday, if not then scientists would not be working specifically in this area and work as hard as they are, if they didn’t think it was possible.
The big question is when and it is a million dollar question. It is too early to speculate as there are so many variables. But I think regenerative medicine is going to really take off in the next decade because of all the amazing discoveries happening now.
I hope one day you will be here to see this amazing breakthrough be seeded in our world!

My father in law and I are interested on limb regeneration as he has lost his hand in an accident at the age of 17. We were watching the series What On Earth and saw the story which led me to find you here. I was just wondering if it is at all possible to regenerate an entire hand as opposed to a single finger? Thank you for your comments and discussing about your father-in-law injuries. It is wonderful that the series you watched, talked about limb regeneration and that this inspired you to do some searching on the internet.
At the moment it is not possible to regrow a lost hand. At best it is only possible to stimulate regrowth (partially) in the first digit and only if some of the nail bed is still present.
However, some scientists working in this field suggest that new advances are coming soon where it could be possible to rebuild tissues or regrow beyond the first digit and this would be a major breakthrough.
I read one scientific article where the researchers felt it might be possible to regrow an arm in 10 years.
The following article discusses a hypothetical and therotical approach of how you could grow a new arm that is being developed by the scientist Dr. Michael Levin who is a leading specialist in this area of research for limb regeneration. He believes we will make this medical breakthrough scientific discovery in our lifetimes.
